Case Study - Community Calling Ltd

ABOUT COMMUNITY CALLING LTD: In March 2020, COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown measures knocked the most vulnerable off their feet. Sarah Scullion, CEO formed Community Calling in response to the pandemic with the core purpose of creating an online community to connect volunteers with those in need. The community performs essential duties such as prescriptions runs, access to food and financial support and befriending.

WHY SARAH NEEDED SUPPORT?: Sarah needed to set-up a Board of Directors. She had never set-up a board, had no knowledge of boards, how to find board members or how to run board meetings. The work of Community Calling is extremely busy, and she underestimated the work required to build a board, so Sarah contacted Anne Orr for help.

FINDING THE RIGHT SKILLS: By working with Anne Orr, Sarah identified the skill-set that the Community Calling board should contain. This opened up the opportunity to build a brilliant board with diverse skills that would support the organisation as part of the longer term strategy, not just to fill seats at the table.

FORMING A BOARD: Anne also provided Community Calling with a simple step-by-step guide to demystify the process of figuring out what skill-set and level of experience the board required all the way through to registering each Board Members in Company House.

RUNNING THE FIRST BOARD MEETING: What is a quorum? Who runs the meeting? What should we talk about? What items need to be on the agenda? What is my role in the board meeting? All these questions can be daunting, and lack of a shared understanding is often why board meetings fail.

In order to ensure the first board meeting of Community Calling was a success, Anne provided Community Calling with an agenda that included explainer notes, so all attendees could easily understand what each agenda item meant and why it was important to the purpose of the meeting.

“It’s easy to underestimate the amount of work required to do things right.

As a startup founder, I totally get that but I guess this came at me from left field.

3 months ago I had no idea I would be building a board anytime soon and here we are today with this amazing board of directors who have come together specifically for a great cause.

This is all down to the help I received from Anne.

I actually don’t think I could have managed to it without the guidance provided, especially in what already was a crisis situation.

Absolutely first class service and would highly recommend getting in touch if you are considering building a board or improving an existing one.

Anne goes above and beyond to ensure you have the knowledge and tools necessary to things right!”

— Sarah Scullion, Founder and CEO of Community Calling Ltd

Working with Anne gave Sarah confidence and peace of mind. She is delighted with the board and it’s even better than she could ever have expected.
